Evidence-led science outreach
Science outreach, grounded in research.
NOVA Outreach isn't just about delivering great science engagement — it's about understanding what makes science engagement work. Our programmes are informed by ongoing PhD research at Cardiff University.
The science
What is science capital?
Science capital is a way of understanding the science-related knowledge, attitudes, experiences, and resources that a person has. Research shows that children with higher science capital are more likely to see science as "for them" — and to pursue STEM subjects and careers.
But science capital is not evenly distributed. Children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and those without scientists in their family, often have lower science capital — not because they lack ability, but because they lack access.
NOVA Outreach exists to change that. Our school visits, books, apps, and digital tools are all designed to build science capital — to give every child the belief that science is for them.
The research
Our PhD programme
NOVA Outreach's founder is a PhD researcher at Cardiff University, conducting active research in two fields:
Science education research
Measuring the impact of NOVA Outreach school visits on science capital and science identity, with surveys taken before and after sessions.
Cometary astrophysics
Investigating the behaviour of Comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann — one of the most active and enigmatic objects in the outer Solar System.
This dual expertise means NOVA Outreach's programmes are both scientifically rigorous and educationally effective — built by someone doing real research in both fields.
